MY MOTHER WAS MURDERED BY A SUICIDE BOMBER {ENGLISH, SWEDISH, AND ARABIC WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES} (TV)

Summary

This Swedish documentary tells of a son's attempts to come to terms with his mother's death after she is killed by a suicide bomber.

The program begins with a police officer reading a report which details the death of 78-year-old Stockholm resident Perla Hermele. She was vacationing at the Park Hotel in the Israeli beach resort of Netanya in March of 2002 when a suicide bomber entered the hotel and set off an explosive, killing himself and thirty others. The report has been read to Perla's son, Bernt, a Swedish journalist who announces that he is going to take a trip to explore the circumstances which led to her death.

Bernt first visits with Perla's friend of sixty years, who survived the hotel blast and was with Perla when she died. Bernt later travels to the mortuary in Tel Aviv where his mother's body was taken, then talks with a firefighter who reported to the scene of the disaster. Bernt and the fireman return to the refurbished hotel and look at the dining room where Perla died.

Finally, Bernt travels to Palestine to talk with the father and brother of the suicide bomber, hoping to understand the killer's motivations. All of the encounters are interspersed with home movies of Perla and her family.

(This program is in English, Swedish, and Arabic with English subtitles.)
