WHAT ABOUT BRIAN: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The series premiere in this drama series about Brian O'Hara, the sole single guy in his group of friends. This episode begins with Brian yelling at his best friend Adam for breaking their "pact." Two weeks earlier, the three couples -- Brian's pregnant sister Nic and her husband Angelo, parents of three children Dave and Deena, and Adam and his pediatrician girlfriend Marjorie -- and Brian head to the movies, with Brian forced to drive himself due to space limitations. While on the drive, trying to flirt with a girl in the car beside him, Brian accidentally hits another car. Next, two days before the "pact" was broken, Adam, Marjorie, and Brian talk about how he is dating the girl whose car he hit. He admits that, almost immediately after the crash, the two were back in her apartment having sex. Adam feels that Brian is clearly not into "Car Girl." Then, while Adam is off fetching beers, Marjorie has a heart-to-heart with Brian, leading to his realization that he's fallen for her. Later, Brian confides to Dave how he is in love with Marjorie and Dave tells him that it's "not an option." Later, Adam makes the pact with Brian that he will break up with Marjorie if Brian breaks up with Karen, a.k.a. "Car Girl." Breaking up with Karen at the least opportune time, she yells at him for being a "serial monogamist." Nevertheless, Brian and Karen attend a couples' brunch that day. There, Brian informs Dave that, with Adam breaking up with Marjorie, he can possibly make a move on her. Brian and Dave also discuss their independent video game company, Zap Monkey. However, soon Adam and Marjorie arrive, announcing that they have just gotten engaged.

After Karen storms away, Brian argues with Adam about the pact. Adam claims he did honor the pact, but when Marjorie acted so classy after being dumped he was forced to admit he loved her. Later, Brian tries to speak with Marjorie but she's angry as she knows about the pact. That afternoon, Brian returns home to find that Karen has locked him out of his own apartment. Forced to head toward Adam's house, he inadvertently reveals to Marjorie that the pact was Adam's idea. Soon, Marjorie is ranting to Brian about Adam's behavior. Meanwhile, Adam is on a trip to New York. Marjorie also encourages Brian to stay with her while Adam is out of town. At the same time, Deena attends a yoga class with an attractive instructor. Later, Deena wonders to Dave why they never have sex any more. Deena theorizes that maybe they would have more excitement in their lives if they had sex with other people, but Dave is skeptical. That night, Brian and Marjorie get drunk before she suggests that they break into his apartment, claiming it back from Karen. When Karen takes her dog for a walk, they implement the plan. However, when Karen returns prematurely, the two hide in the closet. There, Brian and Marjorie find themselves kissing before Marjorie storms out of the house, alerting Karen to their presence. The next day, Brian goes to work at Zap Monkey, where his co-workers rock out to The Who's "Baba O'Riley." However, Brian is not in the mood, revealing that he kissed Marjorie.

Then, Dave reveals that Deena wants to have an open marriage. Later, Brian rushes to the hospital to find that Nic has had a miscarriage. Then, while searching for Marjorie, Brian is surprised to learn that she went to a convention in Las Vegas, where Adam is meeting her. Rushing there, Brian quickly realizes he has made an impetuous decision. However, Marjorie spots him and Brian is forced to speak with her, revealing that he has feelings for her. Just then, Adam arrives. Meanwhile, Dave decides he doesn't want an open relationship, but Deena is nowhere to be found. The next morning, Dave wonders why Deena was atypically at yoga on a Monday night. Brian then returns from Las Vegas to find his home totally wrecked by Karen, who left behind her dog. Finally, at yet another couples' brunch, Marjorie sets up Brian with her friend Lisa. Includes commercials.
