THE ONE: MAKING A MUSIC STAR {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The premiere in this reality series in which eleven would-be music stars live together at "The One" academy in Los Angeles while attempting to win a talent competition as the country's best unsigned artist. The show opens by introducing the judges: singer/songwriter/producer Mark Hudson; singer/songwriter/producer Kara DioGuardi; and music mogul Andre Harrell. Then, host George Stroumboulopoulos takes the stage to explain the talent competition rules. Next, the contestants of "The One" join to perform Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time." Afterward, Stroumboulopoulos welcomes the three judges to the stage. Then, Jackie Mendez from Miami, Florida, discusses her Cuban heritage and how she attempts to fuse jazz and pop. She performs Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." The judges critique her performance, with Harrell calling her spectacular and "looking as good as Cuban dessert." Next, the program looks at what happened when the eleven contestants first entered "The One" academy to live and work. Then, Jeremiah Richey of Waxahachie, Texas, explains how he is a "smorgasbord" of musical skills and how he grew up without a father. He performs Foreigner's "Waiting For a Girl Like You." The judges call him "courageous" and "full of heart." Next, Nashville's Jadyn Maria discusses her Puerto Rican heritage and love of Mariah Carey's "pipes." She performs The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On." The judges critique her performance, with Hudson finding a few negatives while Harrell and DioGuardi find it "ferocious," "hot," and "sweet." Then, Syesha Mercado of Sarasota, Florida, discusses starting her singing career in church and having much faith. She performs Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools." The judges critique her performance, telling her to be less theatrical. Next, the program offers another look inside the academy, where the music experts often have to set the contestants straight with "tough love." Then, Michael Cole, from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, discusses being "nuts" while addressing his shift from car salesman to rocker. He performs Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels' "Devil in a Blue Dress." The judges critique his performance, commending his outstanding vocal abilities. Next, Austin Carroll of Memphis, Tennessee, discusses being "eccentric" and "quirky" as he combines rock, country, gospel, and rhythm and blues. He performs The Band's "The Weight." The judges critique his performance, claiming he has "true greatness" in him. Then, Littleton, Colorado's Aubrey Collins discusses her influences and moving to Los Angeles with her family so that she could pursue her dream. She performs Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild." The judges critique her performance, with Harrell thinking it was a little off while Hudson enjoyed it. Next, film clips show a series of flirtations going on within the academy house. Then, Sandusky, Ohio's Nick Brownell discusses being a singer/guitarist in high school before revealing his biggest fear. He performs Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." The judges critique his performance, thinking he was "stiff" and still has some work to do. Then, New Orlean's Scott Granger discusses why he loves music and the various instruments that he plays. He performs The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." The judges critique his performance, will each being greatly impressed. Next, footage shows the contestants "checking out" their in-house competition. Then, Seattle's Caitlin Evanson discusses being a fiddler for country music artists as well as overcoming a drinking problem. She performs Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love." The judges critique her performance, thinking she nailed it. Next, Adam McInnis of Jackson, New Jersey, discusses being tone deaf until three years previous and how his style is "timeless." He performs The Guess Who's "American Woman." The judges critique his performance, with DioGuardi saying he's "a little pitchy" but has an "incredible visual image." Afterward, Stroumboulopoulos tells the at-home viewers to vote for their favorite performers. He notes that, on the following evening, the three least-voted-on contestants will be identified and given the chance to sing another song. One will subsequently be saved by the judges and a second saved by the contestants. The remaining performer will be sent packing. Includes commercials.
