MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO ROBERT M. BATSCHA UNIVERSITY SEMINAR SERIES, THE: MEDIA AS NEWS & VIEWS: MADELEINE ALBRIGHT AND HENRY KISSINGER ON MEDIA AND FOREIGN POLICY {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of "Media as News & Views" seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in New York, and moderated by Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of the Museum, this seminar examines the relationship between public officials and the "ever-present and omnipresent" media. Panelists include Henry Kissinger, secretary of state under President Richard Nixon and President Gerald Ford; and Madeleine Albright, secretary of state under President Bill Clinton. Clips, spread throughout the seminar, show news footage of Kissinger and Albright during --and after -- their years in office. Museum Chairman of the Board Frank A. Bennack, Jr. opens the evening by discussing the significance of the seminar series. He then introduces Mitchell, who brings Albright and Kissinger to the stage. They discuss topics which include: the varied duties which come from doing the president's bidding; the emergence of "shuttle diplomacy" under Kissinger; whether the press understood what Kissinger was trying to accomplish; how international time can cause confusion when deadlines are set; Kissinger's role in Middle East diplomacy; negotiating tactics used by Kissinger; riding in airplanes with press members who cover the White House; Albright's controversial meeting with Korean dictator Kim Jong-il; being concerned with how a press photograph can be interpreted; the need for being expressionless in public; ways in which members of the press misconstrue officials' behavior; how reporters try to dupe their subject; the importance of CNN to the U.S. security; the effects of television reporters on diplomatic relations; the current situation in Darfur; whether the press has inured people toward scenes of suffering; the role of television in covering Nixon's trip to China; Kissinger's oft-contentious relationship with journalist Marvin Kalb; when skepticism from the press turns to cynicism; Albright getting heckled while speaking at Ohio State University; whether Kissinger reads blogs; and why Kissinger and Albright continue to be newsmakers.
