PATH TO 9-11, THE {PART 1 OF 2} {TAPE 2 OF 2} / NIGHTLINE: HUNT FOR OSAMA BIN LADEN (TV)
Summary
Tape two of two. Continued from T:89723. Part one in this two-part miniseries, a dramatization of events leading up to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, based on sources which include the 9/11 Commission report and containing fictionalized scenes and composite characters. After the Kenyan bombing, Kirk heads out on a tip to capture Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-Owhali. After an extensive chase, his mission proves successful. Meanwhile, O'Neill and Clarke wonder how President Clinton will react to the recent bombings. In the White House Situation Room in August 1998, Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Secretary of Defense William Cohen, and the National Security Council try to define the enemy, with Albright noting that taking on the Taliban would be a major military effort. They figure out a plan to target Bin Ladin when he meets with his top advisers on August 20, 1998. On that day, Clinton reveals that America launched an attack on Bin Ladin's compound. While under attack, al-Zawahiri calls Nicholas Lanier, an ABC News Middle East correspondent, to report that America has failed to kill Bin Ladin. Al-Zawahiri claims "the war has begun." Massoud is angered at Kirk as Al-Qaeda begins to target the Northern Alliance. He's also infuriated that Washington officials alerted Pakistani officials about the plan to kill Bin Laden. Meanwhile, O'Neill is excited that Tenet is ready to go after Bin Ladin. Meanwhile, Muhammad comes to the Al- Qaeda training camp in Al Matar, Afghanistan, in March of 1999. There, he tells Bin Ladin, via al-Zawahiri, of a vast hijacking plan, "The Planes Operation." Muhammad reveals that he will need some pilots for the operation. Al-Zawahiri would like it to coincide with America's millenium celebration. Nine months later, at the U.S./Canada border at Port Angeles, Washington, customs agent Diana Dean uncovers explosives being smuggled into America by Ahmed Ressam of Algeria. Now, O'Neill knows there must be several terrorist cells in America, first targeting Abdelghani Meskini in Brooklyn, after finding his name in Ressam's wallet. O'Neill's team heads to Brooklyn on December 20, 1999 where they find suspicious material in the man's apartment. O'Neill wants to use Meskini to uncover the whole network. O'Neill orders all suspects rounded up on December 30. O'Neill questions Meskini on the cell's plans, but he refuses to talk. The New Year's millenium festivities go on as planned in Times Square, despite the imminent threat looming. Later that night, John Miller joins O'Neill at his New Year's celebration, stating that O'Neill "dodged a bullet" with Times Square remaining unscathed. Part one ends back on September 11, 2001 with American Airlines Flight 11, as the terrorists prepare for their hijacking by approaching the cockpit. After part one, a special "Nightline: Hunt for Osama Bin Laden" hosted by Cynthia McFadden airs. She discusses the current status of Bin Ladin, five years after the 9/11 attacks. Brian Ross, investigative correspondent, joins her to report on how and why the United States government has failed to get Bin Ladin, getting input from Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism czar, and various government operatives. Clarke says that the failure by America to react to the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole in October of 2000 emboldened Al-Qaeda. Co-anchor Terry Moran also reports live from the ground in Kabul, Afghanistan, stating that the war is still escalating. Includes commercials.
