MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television and Radio which celebrate media as entertainment. Held at the Museum in Los Angeles, this seminar celebrates "The New Adventures of Old Christine," a sitcom about a divorced mother, Christine Campbell, trying to juggle the needs of her job, young son, and ex-husband.
Host Barbara Dixon (director, The Museum of Television & Radio/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and introduces Jon Kelley (weekend host, "Extra"). Kelley welcomes creator/executive producer Kari Lizer, who introduces the episode "My Big Fat Sober Wedding," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:90767.)
Afterward, Kelley moderates the following panelists: Lizer and cast members Alex Kapp Horner (Lindsay), Tricia O'Kelley (Marly Ehrhardt), Emily Rutherfurd ("New" Christine Liesl Hunter), Clark Gregg (Richard Campbell, Sr.), Hamish Linklater (Matthew Kimble), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Old" Christine Campbell).
Panelists touch on such topics as: how cast and crew feels about watching a screening in front of a live audience; how Lizer conceived the show; Lizer's experience as a divorced parent; the cast members' thoughts upon first reading the pilot script; when Lizer realized she had something "special" with the show; Louis-Dreyfus overcoming the "Seinfeld Curse"; the show fitting Louis-Dreyfus's sensibilities; the difficulty of "writing funny"; when the cast realized the series had some legs; one racy scene that the network did not allow; any "dirt" amongst the cast; and the cast's chemistry and feeling like they're "family."
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: whether Lizer wrote the pilot with Louis-Dreyfus in mind; how Louis-Dreyfus's previous work on "Seinfeld" affects her current work; Louis-Dreyfus's comedic timing; Louis-Dreyfus's comedic idols growing up, including Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore; whether "old" Christine will have a boyfriend any time soon; whether there is any pressure to make the show appeal to a younger audience; whether it has become tougher to get comedies on the air; how making a successful series is not a "science"; physical humor on the show; how the Christine character has evolved; how Wanda Sykes got involved with show; whether Andy Richter will make another guest appearance; Lizer's secrets for how to survive in the television industry; Lizer having once been an unsuccessful actress; whether Matthew and Christine's parents will ever appear on the show; whether chemistry is considered when casting a show; Louis-Dreyfus's "dark years" on "Saturday Night Live"; and reactions that cast members get on the street.
