OCTOBER ROAD: THE PROS AND CONS OF UPSETTING THE APPLECART (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about a young novelist who returns to his hometown to teach at a local college after having written a tell-all book about the locals.
In this episode, Nick decides against returning to New York City, opting to stay in Knights Ridge for at least a few more weeks. Bob, a.k.a, The Commander, tells Nick about the "blowback," thinking his son will encounter much anger from the locals for his literary depiction of their hometown. Later, Nick considers whether Sam is truly his son, wondering if he should confront Hannah on the situation.
Meanwhile, Owen prepares for his once-every-three-months "date night" with wife Alison. Ikey privately asks Nick to tell noone about his affair with Alison. Later, Nick finds Sam to ask him if he wants to have "a catch" sometime, and he agrees. Then, Hannah finds Nick, angered that he asked Sam to play ball, telling him not to "upset the applecart." Nick also lies and tells Hannah that he got a job at the local college, forcing him to actually go get a position there.
However, things don't go according to plan when dean Leslie Etwood claims that her students have nothing to learn from Nick. After being rejected by the dean, Nick catches up with Aubrey, who wonders why he is so interested in getting a job since he should be financially secure. After seeing Nick with Aubrey, Eddie tells Ikey that he could get back at Nick by making a play for her.
Later, Nick comes up with a "goofy" way to get the dean to hire him. Then, Sam comes over to play catch, but Nick is forced to turn him away. Later, Ray tells Hannah that he's afraid Nick could affect their relationship. She assures him that they're "still good." Then, Eddie gets spiffed up for his apology to -- and chance to make a move on -- Aubrey, presenting her with a mix tape.
Meanwhile, Bob brings a random cat to Hannah's veterinary clinic as an "in" to check out Sam, his curiosity about the boy having been whetted after Nick said he could be his grandson. However, Hannah is on to the ruse since the cat is actually hers. When Nick's plan to show an old report card to the dean gets derailed, Nick instead presents her with a live testimonial from his tenth grade English teacher, Gertrude Weiner. However, the dean again rejects Nick.
Afterward, Nick confronts his father for meddling in Hannah and Sam's affairs. The Commander responds by stating that Sam has the eyes of Nick's mother. That night at Sully's Tavern, Eddie again goes after Aubrey, eventually convincing her to return to his house to see a talking raccoon in his backyard. Meanwhile, Nick wakes the dean up at her home, making a plea in song for her help. This time, she hires him on a probationary basis.
Back at Sully's, Alison and Owen arrive for their date, disturbing Ikey. At Eddie's house, he can't get the raccoon to appear and, soon enough, Hannah realizes that Eddie is making a play for her simply to upset Nick. Meanwhile, Nick meets Hannah at Sully's, confirming that he finally got hired before apologizing for his father. He also asks if Sam is his son, noting that the boy has a peanut allergy, which runs in the Garrett family. However, Hannah is not convinced, going on to tell Nick the name of Sam's father before leaving the bar.
Following Aubrey's rejection, Eddie ends up asking waitress Janet out on a date. Finally, a depressed Nick coincidentally sees Hannah kissing Ray as he walks home. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
