NBC NEWS: JIMMY CARTER INAUGURATION (TV)
Summary
This program features coverage of Inauguration Day coverage from WSB, Atlanta. Sen. John Stennis (D-Miss.) is interviewed, and program continues with the presidential motorcade. The Supreme Court Justices are on view, as are President Jimmy Carter's Associates and Cabinet members. Sen. Howard Cannon (D-Nev.) makes some introductory remarks, and Bishop William Cannon delivers the invocation. The program continues with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," followed by Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill's administering the oath of office to Vice President Walter Mondale and Chief Justice Warren Burger's swearing in Jimmy Carter. Carter gives his inaugural address, and Archbishop John P. Roach's benediction is followed by the national anthem. Billy Carter is interviewed, and the Fords and Rockefellers are followed to their helicopter. United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young is interviewed, as are Jody Powell and Hamilton Jordan.
Further highlights include interviews with incoming White House Press Secretary Jody Powell and Presidential Assistant Robert Lipshutz, the twenty-one gun salute for President Gerald Ford and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller as they bid farewell to the military at the Andrews Airforce Base; the start of the parade with the Carter family motorcade and the walk up Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues. The Carters approach the reviewing stand, and Hubert Humphrey is the parade grand marshal. The parade commences with "Hail to the Chief" and features bands and floats from each of the fifty states, the U.S. Army Band, and the U.S. Naval Bands; Naval Admiral Holloway approaches the viewing stand to greet President Carter.
