NBC OPERA THEATRE: THE MAGIC FLUTE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of NBC Opera Theatre's productions. This live broadcast of W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman's new English-language version of "The Magic Flute" commemorates the 200th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As Act I opens, Tamino, an Egyptian prince, meets the bird catcher Papageno. Tamino is ordered by the powerful Queen of Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the evil wizard Sarastro, in whose palace she is imprisoned and the two men are given a magic flute to protect them on their quest. Papageno befriends Pamina. Tamino, however, is separated from Papageno and then reunited through the powers of the flute. The act concludes as Tamino meets his true love Pamina. As Act II opens, Pamina and Tamino are warned they will be subjected to severe tests of faith. They venture through deadly caverns as a final test and, guided by the magic flute, emerge unharmed. Later Papageno meets his ideal mate Papagena, and Tamino and Pamina are wed in the Temple of the Sun. Includes promos and a public service announcement.
