CBS REPORTS: WALTER LIPPMANN YEAR END (TV)
Summary
One in this series of irregularly scheduled in-depth reports. In this special program, Walter Cronkite interviews political columnist and author Walter Lippmann. Lippmann stresses the importance of continued negotiations and equality of military strength between the USSR and America. He says Nikita Khrushchev's position has weakened because of quarrels with Communist China and that negotiations with the USSR have strengthened President John F. Kennedy, as has Britain's entry into the common market. He calls Charles De Gaulle the "main stumbling block" in the Berlin talks and calls Fidel Castro "demented," saying he doubts his ability to stay in power in Cuba. Lippmann discusses the Congo situation, U.S. African policy, and praises late Secretary General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold's policy on the Congo. Commercials deleted.
