Summary
The thirteenth and final part of Kenneth Clark's thirteen-part series tracing the development of Western European civilization in its art and architecture. In part thirteen, Clark studies the growth of materialism and technology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Topics include New York City, monument to materialism; American slavery and anti-slavery movement; birth of humanitarianism and proponents Charles Dickens and Friedrich Engels; Russian novelist and peasant spokesman Leo Tolstoy; and the rise of technology and man's reliance on machines. The program concludes with Kenneth Clark professing his belief in institutions, lessons of history, genius, and cautious optimism.
