Summary

A two-hour news retrospective in which CBS News has matched old films with new information that has become available since 1968 to shed light on the many important people and events of 1968. Covered in this segment are the Vietnam War and the Tet offensive; the peace movement; Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson and Gen. William Westmoreland; the media and the war; a rehearsal of Johnson's March 31, 1968, "non-candidacy" speech; the black civil rights movement and leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Stokely Carmichael and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.; the FBI's harassment of King; King's assassination and its aftershock; and the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon and Robert F. Kennedy.

Other topics include the draft and a scene from "Alice's Restaurant"; George Segal and the Smothers Brothers singing an anti-war song; the Columbia University riots; a scene from "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman; middle-class parents in Duluth, Minn.; yippie Jerry Rubin; the rock music scene, with music by Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix; and the Republican and Democratic conventions. Election year coverage includes Pres. Richard Nixon and Hubert H. Humphrey, conflict at the Democratic convention, and comments by Humphrey. Other highlights include Pres. Lyndon B.
