Summary
The fifth episode of this special series tracing the history of one black family through the generations. In this portion, beginning in summer 1932, Simon Haley is dissatisfied with working for his father-in-law Will Palmer. Events in this episode include the following: Simon acquires a tenured teaching job at a black college; Will Palmer dies; Simon becomes concerned for the plight of the small farmers; white people break into Simon's home, resentful of his aid to black farmers; his wife, Bertha, becomes seriously ill; Simon wins a victory when a black farmer obtains a farm subsidy; and Bertha Haley dies and her oldest son, Alex, is despondent. Includes commercials.
