NOVA: ONE SMALL STEP (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science documentaries. This program, part one of two, examines the history of the United States space program. Starting in 1957 with the launching of Russia's spacecraft, Sputnick, this program gives a step-by-step study of NASA's constant experimentation in space. Highlights include footage of spacecraft launchings as well as astronauts inside and outside the spacecraft; historical overviews of the space race; information concerning the technichal operations involved with launchings; the disasters as well as the successes in the space program; the race to be first in putting a man on the moon. Throughout the program, the actual transmissions from Houston to the astronauts are heard, including Neil Armstrong's transmission when he stepped on the moon. Also included are comments from journalist Richard Lewis; Christopher Kraft Jr., the Director of the Johnson Space Center; Max Faget, NASA's chief spacecraft designer; and Dr. David Winter, NASA's Director of Life Sciences. Some animation is included in the program.
