Summary

One in this series of current events documentary programs, hosted by Edward R. Murrow. In this program, Murrow reports on the U.S. promise to support Formosa and the Pescadores after Communist China's shelling of offshore islands. Also in this program, Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-Maine) interviews Chiang Kai-Shek, president of the Republic of China, at his mountain home outside Taipei, Formosa. President Chiang, with Madame Chiang interpreting, comments on the following: the Nationalist Chinese evacuation of the Tachen Islands after the Communist Chinese shelling; the U.S.-Republic of China relation outlined in the Formosa Resolution; U.S. resolve to defend Quemoy and Matsu; the Nationalist Chinese plans to retake mainland China; the Soviet Union's relationship with the People's Republic of China; the fate of the people and countries of Southeast Asia; the report that U.S. equipment was captured at Tachen; neutralism; and the friendship between the U.S. and the Republic of China. The second segment features a report on Radio Free Europe (RFE) in Munich and one of the RFE's most popular shows behind the Iron Curtain, "The Polish Tea Party." Highlights include the following: a satire on the fortunes of Georgi Malenkov; the "MIG Polka"; Russian attempts at jamming RFE; RFE's twenty-four-hour monitoring of Radio Moscow; Richard Hottelet on the RFE's dropping of propaganda leaflets behind the Iron Curtain; and President Dwight Eisenhower in a radio address on the RFE mission to uplift the spirits of the people behind the Iron Curtain.
