60 MINUTES {FIRST FAMILY OF THE G.O.P.} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. This special edition, "First Family of the GOP," focuses on Republican presidential nominee Gov. Ronald Reagan and his family. This program begins with Mike Wallace interviewing Gov. Reagan at his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Topics include the following: Reagan's political experience; his career as an actor; the Vietnam War; the Soviet Union; SALT II; nuclear arms limitation agreements; his "trigger-happy" image; a snafu over a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) invitation; and his opinions on African-Americans, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), women's rights, abortion, Republican vice-presidential contenders, Japanese automobiles, his health, and former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the fireside chat. Wallace interviews the Reagans' daughter, Patti Davis, who discusses her anti-nuclear stand, her differences of opinion with her parents about premarital sex, abortion, women's issues, the ERA, and marijuana; her feelings about the possibility of her father's becoming president, and the media's representation of the Reagan children. She also sings her own composition, "No Place Left to Hide." Wallace talks with Nancy Reagan about her belief in her husband; the demands of the presidency; being First Lady; her role as the governor's wife; the way she deals with her anger; and her opinions on social issues, her children, Johnny Carson, and the Reagan hair jokes. Includes excerpts from an earlier "60 Minutes" interview with the Reagans, including Maureen Reagan, and a clip from "Hellcats of the Navy" with Nancy Davis and Ronald Reagan. The program concludes with "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney" about how we elect our president. Includes commercials.
