BELL & HOWELL CLOSE-UP!: WALK IN MY SHOES (TV)

Summary

One in a series of topical documentaries presented by Bell & Howell. This program examines the position of the black person in American society, the progress achieved in racial equality, and goals of the civil rights movement. Highlights include the following: a taxi driver talks about the poor housing and economic conditions of black people in Harlem; a Harlem woman shows her apartment, which is badly in need of repair; a black man in Harlem takes the "A" train downtown to work in the garment district; in a suburb, a group of middle-class black people discuss the stigma of color; comedian Dick Gregory performs a comedy routine, and later comments on black-white relations; in a Chicago neighborhood, middle-class black people discuss the struggle for equality, and comment on integration and socializing with white people; in Los Angeles, middle-class blacks discuss the recent influx of poor blacks to the city; Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and a Southerner comment on Brown vs. the Board of Education; demonstrations against integration, national guardsmen escorting a black child to school, and sit-ins; Wyatt Tee Walker, director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, discusses the leadership of black organizations, and what black people want; Jim Farmer of Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sees a new element in the fight for equality in the young black men and women who are willing to take risks; Percy Sutton describes his childhood and youth, the fear that gripped him when he rode in the front of a bus going from Atlanta to Montgomery, and the joy of being served at a lunch counter; the president of the National Baptist Convention says his organization must support racial equality; Malcolm X addresses black Muslims on the topic of "separation or death"; and the programs concludes with a black person returning home to Harlem.
