PRESIDENT RICHARD M. NIXON: FAREWELL SPEECH TO THE WHITE HOUSE STAFF (TV)
Summary
This program, which begind abruptly, offers live coverage of President Richard M. Nixon's farewell to his White House staff. Nixon says "we'll see you again" and encourages his staff to serve the new president, Gerald Ford. Alluding to the Watergate cover-up that forced him to resign from office effective at noon on August 9, 1974, he mentions that the top man takes responsibility for the mistakes of any administration. In a rambling, maudlin passage, he reminisces about his parents, saying his mother was "a saint." Nixon urges the staff to look to the future and quotes Theodore Roosevelt. He tells the assembled staff, "You'll always be in our hearts and prayers" and departs. On the south lawn of the White House, President and Mrs. Ford escort the Nixons to a waiting helicopter. Aboard the helicopter, Nixon waves goodbye.
