ACADEMY AWARDS, THE 25TH ANNUAL (TV)

Summary

A two-hour Oscar presentation, broadcast live from Hollywood and New York. Highlights of this program, which celebrates the silver anniversary of the awards by featuring previous Oscar winners as presenters, include the following: Ronald Reagan, in voice-over, reports on the crowds outside the Pantages Theater; Charles Brackett, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, introduces Bob Hope, who hosts from Hollywood; Hope performs a monologue about television; and, for the performances of the five nominated songs, Celeste Holm sings "Thumbelina," Billy Daniels performs "Because You're Mine," Peggy Lee and Johnny Mercer sing "Zing a Little Zong," Tex Ritter sings "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin'," and Marilyn Maxwell and Hope sing "Am I in Love?" Winners include: Helen Rose for "The Bad and the Beautiful"; Marcel Vertes for "Moulin Rouge"; Norman McLaren for "Neighbours"; Irwin Allen for "The Sea Around Us"; Elmo Williams and Harry Gerstad for "High Noon"; Cedric Gibbons, Edward Carfagno, Edwin B. Willis, and Keogh Gleason for "The Bad and the Beautiful"; Paul Sheriff and Vertes for "Moulin Rouge"; the London Film Sound Department for "Breaking the Sound Barrier" (accepted by Stewart Granger); Fred Quimby for "Johann Mouse"; Boris Vermont for "Light in the Window"; Walt Disney for "Water Birds"; Robert Surtees for "The Bad and the Beautiful"; Winton C. Hoch and Archie Stout for "The Quiet Man"; Dimitri Tiomkin for "High Noon"; Alfred Newman for "With a Song in My Heart"; and Tiomkin for "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin'." Next is a salute on stage to past winners, including Paul Muni, Jane Darwell, Victor McLaglen, Holm, Jean Hersholt, Teresa Wright, Donald Crisp, Janet Gaynor, Bobby Driscoll, Dean Jagger, Ginger Rogers, Ray Milland, Olivia De Havilland, Charles Coburn, Joan Crawford, George Murphy, Anne Baxter, Ronald Colman, Jane Wyman, Broderick Crawford, Claire Trevor, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Loretta Young, and Edmund Gwenn. Winners during the second hour include: John Ford for "The Quiet Man" (John Wayne accepts); Frederic M. Frank, Theodore St. John, and Frank Cavett for "The Greatest Show on Earth"; Charles Schnee for "The Bad and the Beautiful"; T.E.B. Clarke for "The Lavender Hill Mob" (Piper Laurie accepts); Anthony Quinn for "Viva Zapata" (Mrs. Quinn accepts); Gloria Grahame for "The Bad and the Beautiful"; Gary Cooper for "High Noon" (Wayne accepts); Shirley Booth for "Come Back, Little Sheba"; and Cecil B. De Mille for "The Greatest Show on Earth." Also presented are honorary awards, technical awards, and the Irving Thalberg Award. Includes appearances by Joseph M. Schenck, George Alfred Mitchell, and Gloria Swanson. Hope concludes by saying good night to New York, and introducing Johnny Green and Reagan. Commercials deleted.
