OLIVER AND THE ARTFUL DODGER (TV)

Summary

In this feature-length, animated musical from Hanna-Barbera Productions, Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger are reunited on a quest to find a hidden will. Since Oliver was adopted by Mr. Brownlow, he and Dodger have been leading very different lives. The Dodger survives by selling scrap metal in London fleamarkets, and finds joy in saving orphans from Mr. Bumble's dreadful Workhouse for Unwanted Children. Dodger has just rescued a little girl named Elizabeth, who joins his family of orphans, including Flip, the Deacon, Happy Harry, and their dog, Hero. Meanwhile, Oliver has been leading the life of a young English gentleman, but now, Mr. Brownlow is sick and dying. On his deathbed, Brownlow tells Oliver that he will inherit his estate, according to a will that is hidden in a secret compartment in the furniture. But Brownlow dies before he can tell Oliver its exact location.

Suddenly, a man named Samuel Sniperly arrives to claim his inheritance as Brownlow's nephew and sole surviving relative. By the next afternoon, Sniperly has put the house on the market and sold all the furniture, with Brownlow's will hidden somewhere inside. Once Oliver has lost the will and his home, he is depressed to be back on the streets -- until he runs into the Dodger and his family of orphans. Oliver tells Dodger his tale of woe, and the two decide to find the furniture and reclaim the hidden will. But Sniperly learns of the hidden will and decides to hunt for it as well. A race ensues as everyone tries to find the furniture and uncover the document. Their search takes them into the countryside, where they meet kindly farmers, hospitable gypsies, many animals, and finally, the wicked man who bought Brownlow's furniture. To make matters worse, Sniperly enlists Mr. Bumble's help in capturing the group of youngsters and destroying the will. But both Oliver and Dodger are determined to defeat Bumble and Sniperly and help other orphaned street children like themselves. Commercials deleted.
