Summary

One in this series on the performing and visual arts. This documentary focuses on the life and career of Orson Welles. Highlights include a montage of the many faces of Welles; the 1938 Time magazine cover story on the twenty-three-year-old prodigy; his parents and school years; his meeting with John Houseman and their work on the Federal Theatre Project in 1936; Welles and Houseman's founding of the Mercury Theatre on the Air; the "War of the Worlds" scare; his move to Hollywood and the film "Citizen Kane"; and his declining years and a clip from his film "The Lady from Shanghai." Next, the program shows Welles portraying Shakespeare's Falstaff in his film "Chimes at Midnight." It goes on to such moments as his film "Macbeth" and his stage version of "Around the World in 80 Days"; his self-imposed exile in Europe and work in British radio; and clips from some of his later films including "Touch of Evil," "The Trial" (with Anthony Perkins), "Chimes at Midnight," and "A Man For All Seasons." Commercials deleted.
