60's LEGACY, THE {THE SIXTIES LEGACY}: TOWN BLOODY HALL: A DIALOGUE ON WOMEN'S LIBERATION {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this nostalgia series chronicling unique and significant events from the turbulent and politically volatile 1960s. Part one of this documentary filmed at New York University's Town Hall on April 30, 1971, on "A Dialogue on Women's Liberation," a debate and dialogue chaired by Norman Mailer. Mailer makes opening remarks, explains the format of the debate and dialogue, and comments on his article "The Prisoner of Sex." In this portion of this lively and sometimes hostile dialogue, Mailer introduces the following speakers: Jacqueline Ceballos, president of the New York Chapter of the National Organization of Women ("NOW"), who discusses NOW's work, the fight for equal pay, the structure of marriage, and the image of women in advertising and commercials; Germaine Greer, author of "The Female Eunuch," who discusses the concept of the "Masculine Artist" and the role of the "goddess" in a male-dominated artistic world; Jill Johnston, introduced by Mailer as the "master of free-associated prose," who exits from the discussion when her reading of a poem about her lesbianism uses up more than the allotted time and sparks a controversy; and Diana Trilling, introduced by Mailer as our "leading lady literary critic." Continues with T83:0529.

(Aired on WNET/New York under the title of "The 60's Legacy"; this program was donated by The Living Archives.)
