Summary
Continued from T83:0591. Part two of this three part docudrama on the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia on Aug. 20, 1968, based on Czech official Zdenek Mlynar's account and supplemented by independent research. Highlights include the following: the Russians take the Presidium members into protective custody; Dubcek and others are arrested by the Soviets; at noon in Dubcek's office, Mlynar questions a Soviet soldier about why the invasion took place; in Dubcek's office, the prisoners share food and beer with their Russian captors; at 10:00 p.m., a Soviet officer reports that a meeting is taking place at the highest level and everything is being sorted out; the Presidium members are freed; Mlynar and Sadovsky learn that the pro-Soviet faction of the Presidium is meeting the Soviet ambassador, who suggests the formation of a new government; the pro-Soviet faction tells Pres. Svoboda that they are forming a new government with Bilak succeeding Dubcek; Svoboda refuses to approve and flies to Moscow to see Brezhnev; and Dubcek and Cernik also go to Moscow.
