INVASION {PART 3 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T83:0592. Part three of this three-part docudrama on the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia on Aug. 20, 1968, based on Czech official Zdenek Mlynar's account and supplemented by independent research. Highlights include the following: Soviets are unable to break Dubcek and Svoboda, and to set up a collaborationist government; Mlynar flies to Moscow as a delegate for the 14th Congress of the Czech Communist Party with instructions not to sign an agreement until Soviet troops withdraw from Prague; Mlynar meets Dubcek who has been interrogated but refuses to sign anything; Czechs ask Mlynar to draft a statement justifying the invasion; the Czech Presidium debates the wisdom of signing the Soviet statement; the signing ceremony develops into a heated exchange between Dubcek and Brezhnev, and the Soviets leave; Mlynar apologizes, the signing takes place, and Czechs return to Prague; and concludes with an update on what happened to the members of the Presidium in the years since 1968.
