Summary
This "CBS News Special Report" presents President Gerald Ford's sixth press conference, right on the heels of his State of the Union Address the night before, held in the auditorium of the Old Executive Office Building. CBS News correspondent Barry Serafin opens the tape by discussing the upcoming press conference. Once at the podium, Ford offers an opening statement in which he reviews several critical energy issues, offering three possible solutions to the current crisis including rationing and embargo programs. He also discusses signing a presidential proclamation for an energy conservation program which offers incentives to those that conserve. Next, White House reporters including Frank Cormier, Helen Thomas, Rom Jarriel, and Peter Lisagor, among others, question the President on the following topics: his economic and energy proposals and the Democrats' opposition to them; allegations of improper domestic surveillance by the CIA; supposed FBI files on certain members of Congress; the amnesty program for draft dodgers; current unemployment rates; the cost-of-living increase attached to social security; and his "likes" about his first sixth months as president. Afterward, Serafin sums up the conference before George Herman and Eric Sevareid join him in studio to offer an economic analysis of the press conference. Next, CBS News White House correspondent Bob Schieffer reports on the "mixed cues" that the White House has offered regarding gas rationing before Serafin wraps it up in the studio.
