20/20: BARBRA STREISAND: PAPA WATCH ME FLY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. This edition features an hour-long interview with Barbra Streisand, her first for television in seven years. After some opening remarks by host Hugh Downs, correspondent Geraldo Rivera introduces his pre-taped interview which takes place on Streisand's ranch compound in Malibu and on location in Prague, Czechoslovakia and Liverpool, England as she shoots "Yentl", her debut as a film director. Streisand discusses the following: her sensitivity to criticism; the difficulty she had getting "Yentl" off the ground; why she refused to change her name and famous nose; her strong will and need to prove herself; her recent need to take risks and get over her life long fears now that she feels life "growing short"; her desire to direct stemming from a need to create a whole vision rather than interpret other people's songs or roles; her shyness as an early root of the media's perception of her as aloof and intimidating; her stage fright; a humorous story about formal singing lesson she once took; her early television appearances with Jack Paar and Judy Garland; her relationship with Elliott Gould; the adolescence she missed because of her early success; her love of collecting art and furniture; the houses in her Malibu compound which she has decorated in different periods and styles; her relationship with Jon Peters and his influence on her career; the thrill of co-writing the Grammy-winning song, "Evergreen"; growing up without a father (he died while she was an infant) and later making a connection with him when she found his books in the basement of her childhood apartment building; and "Yentl" as a means of making peace with her father's memory. Included also are clips of Streisand's movie and concert performances, and behind the scenes footage of Streisand directing "Yentl" on location and doing post-production soundtrack work in the studio. Additionally, Jon Peters appears briefly, interviewed by Rivera about the status of his relationship with Streisand; and actor Mandy Patinkin is seen taking direction from Streisand during "Yentl" filming.
