Summary
The first of a two-part program in which The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and guest artists perform works by composers from the Baroque to early 20th-century periods. This program proceeds as follows: Paula Robison performs Claude Debussy's "Syrinx" on solo flute; host Patrick Watson provides background information on the works of Debussy and Ravel that are performed; Introduction and Allegro by Maurice Ravel is performed by Heidi Lehwalder (harp), James Buswell and Ani Kavafian (violins), Ida Kavafian (viola), Leslie Parnas (cello), Paula Robison (flute), and David Schifrin (clarinet); Charles Wadsdworth, artistic director and harpsichordist of the society, takes over as host and defines the term "chamber music"; the string players are joined by Wadsworth (harpsichord), Alvin Brehm (double bass), Stephen Burns (trumpet), and Judith Blegen (soprano) to perform "Eternal Source of Light Divine" by George Frideric Handel, and Recitative and Aria from "Endimone e Cintia" by Alessandro Scarlatti; Arnold Steinhardt (violin) joins the string players in a performance of the String Sextet from "Capriccio" by Richard Strauss; and this part concludes with the final two movements of the Quartet for Piano and Strings in G Minor, op. 25, by Johannes Brahms, played by Andre-Michel Schub (piano), James Buswell (violin), Michael Tree (viola), and Leslie Parnas (cello).
