HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: BAREFOOT IN ATHENS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas presented by Hallmark. This drama portrays the trial of Socrates, the witty non-conformist who valued freedom more than life. Socrates and his wife, Xantippe, live meagerly with their children in Athens because he refuses to accept money for his lessons in rhetoric. The philosopher is destined to be brought to trial as the people of Athens have grown uncomfortable with his skepticism regarding their gods and values. The trial is delayed temporarily, however, when Sparta defeats Athens in the Peloponnesian War. When Socrates persuades King Pausanias of Sparta to restore democracy in Athens, the indictment against him is restored, and his trial proceeds. Socrates argues that a democracy without examination cannot be healthy as he defends his life and teachings in court. Includes commercials.

(Beginning with the live telecast of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on December 24, 1951, Hallmark has sponsored a series of dramatic specials which since 1952 have been titled "Hallmark Hall of Fame." From 1952 to 1955 Hallmark also presented "Hallmark Hall of Fame," a weekly half-hour dramatic anthology series hosted by Sarah Churchill. The first program, "Dr. Serocold," was televised in January 1952 under the title "Hallmark Television Theatre." This series also ran under the title "Hallmark Summer Theatre" in July and August 1952.)
