HELL IN THE CITY OF THE ANGELS {KTLA} (TV)

Summary

This program features KTLA's week-in-review coverage of the Watts Riots. During the four days of rioting, August 11 through 14, 1965, KTLA devoted thirteen hours and thirty-six minutes to live coverage, pre-empting fourteen programs and eighty-one commercials. Newscaster Hugh Brundage and news director Stan Chambers provided continuity for the news coverage from the KTLA studios, where they interviewed Acting Gov. Glenn L. Anderson, Mayor Sam Yorty, and other civic officials. The telecopter logged more than twenty-three hours of flight time, and 122 KTLA employees participated in the news gathering. KTLA won a Peabody Award for reporting and ushered in a new technology for police departments around the world. During the riots, police officers were often called into ambush by the rioters. The L.A.P.D. asked KTLA to fly the telecopter over questionable spots to see if these calls were legitimate, then watched the flyover reports on Channel Five. Soon after the riots, police choppers became common for law enforcement.
