WOMEN IN JAZZ: THE VOCALISTS: SCATTING (TV)
Summary
The second of three documentaries that examine the work of female jazz vocalists. Hosted by jazz singer Carmen McRae from the Other End Cafe in New York City, this program focuses on the art of scat singing. Highlights include footage of performances by Sarah Vaughan in 1952; Dakota Staton on a 1958 television show with pianist George Shearing, and years later in a live performance at the Angry Squire in New York City, with Bross Townsend on piano, Michael Fox on drums, and David Jackson, Jr., on bass; McRae on a television show early in her career; Ella Fitzgerald with Duke Ellington on piano; legendary saxophone player Charlie Parker; and Sheila Jordan scatting in a style reminiscent of Parker's playing, with Harvie Swartz on bass. In other highlights, the group Alive performs at the Kansas City Women's Jazz Festival (Rhiannon on vocals, Janet Small on piano, Susan Vincenza on bass, Barbara Borden on drums, and Carolyn Brandy on bass); and, at the TOMI Theatre in New York City, vocalist Jay Clayton invites singers Judy Niemak, Marlene Primavera, Danielle Bittan, Jean Lehrman, Anne Louise White, and Theano Anifantakis to join her in a scatting session, accompanied by Jane Ira Bloom on saxophone, Larry Karush on piano, Swartz on bass, and Frank Clayton on drums.
