LIVE AID CONCERT: AN ALL STAR CONCERT FOR AFRICAN RELIEF (TV)

Summary

This music special features highlights from the Live Aid Concert starring some of the biggest names in popular music performing on two continents, North America and Europe, to raise money for the African famine relief program. One concert takes place at Wembley Stadium in London and the other at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Highlights include: Princess Diana and Prince Charles are on hand to open the show at Wembley, and Jack Nicholson does the honors at JFK Stadium; Phil Collins, the first musician to perform on two continents in one day, sings "Against All Odds"; Bette Midler introduces Madonna, who performs her song, "Holiday"; actress Sally Field relays a message concerning the situation in Africa; clips are shown of other acts performing in Japan, Austria, Holland, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Australia, and Germany; Mick Jagger and David Bowie's video for their recording of the Martha and the Vandellas song "Dancing In the Streets" is screened; David Bowie performs "Rebel Rebel" from Wembley Stadium; the finale in London features Paul McCartney singing "Let It Be" with some guest performers; concert organizer Bob Geldof is joined on stage by all the performers to sing "Do They Know It's Christmas Time?"; Patti LaBelle performs John Lennon's "Imagine"; the Who reunite to perform "Won't Get Fooled Again"; Elton John sings "Bennie and the Jets"; and via video, Prince, who could not be at either concert site, sings "Tears In Your Eyes."

Other Highlights include: the duo, Hall & Oates sing "Out Of Touch"; they are joined by former members of The Temptations, Eddie Kendrick and David Ruffin; the four singers perform "Get Ready," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "My Girl"; a message from actor Burt Lancaster is read; Bette Midler introduces Mick Jagger, who performs "Lonely at the Top," "Just Another Night," and "Miss You"; and Tina Turner joins Jagger on stage to sing "State of Shock" and "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)." Bob Dylan is joined by Ron Wood and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and the three perform "Ballad of Hollis Brown," "When the Ship Comes In" and "Blowin' in the Wind." When their set is finished, Lionel Richie appears on stage to lead a rendition of "We Are the World," sung by all the performers from the concert (and joined by Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Sheena Easton, Chrissie Hynde, Cher, and others).
