Summary

One in this cultural anthology series. This program -- performed and recorded in September 1965 in celebration of the consecration of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco -- features the work of Duke Ellington, who was commissioned to compose and conduct this concert of sacred music. With his 14-piece orchestra, along with several choirs and soloists, Ellington premieres the following pieces: "Black, Brown and Beige," with Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone, John Lamb on bass violin, and Lawrence Brown on trombone; "Tell Me It's the Truth," "Come Sunday," and "The Lord's Prayer," with vocalist Esther Marrow; "In the Beginning God," with vocalist Jon Hendricks, Paul Gonsalves on tenor saxophone, and the Speaking Choir; "New World A'Coming" with Ellington as piano soloist; "David Danced Before the Lord with All His Might" with dancer Bunny Briggs and vocalist Jon Hendricks; and "Ain't But the One," with vocalist Jimmy McPhail and the Herman McCoy Choir.
