Summary

In this special, the American Film Institute salutes actor James Cagney. Highlights include clips from the films "The Seven Little Foys" (1955), "White Heat" (1949), "Love Me or Leave Me" (1955), and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942). In other highlights, John Wayne, George C. Scott, Bob Hope, Gov. Ronald Reagan of California, and Charlton Heston, chairman of the AFI, all pay tribute to Cagney; Frank Sinatra introduces members of Cagney's family to the audience; Frank Gorshin, Kirk Douglas, and George Segal perform impersonations of Cagney; Cicely Tyson presents the AFI Fellowship Awards in honor of Cagney; and Sinatra sings "My Way," with lyrics written especially for the occasion by Sammy Cahn. Also included are appearances by Doris Day, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Lemmon, and Mae Clarke.

Also includes clips from the films "Public Enemy" (1931) and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942). Charlton Heston, chairman of the AFI, makes brief closing remarks, and George Stevens, Jr., director of the AFI, presents the Life Achievement Award to Cagney, who delivers an acceptance speech. Commercials deleted.
