LIBERTY WEEKEND: THE PREVIEW (TV)
Summary
This ABC news special previews the events of "Liberty Weekend," the hundredth celebration of the Statue of Liberty. Peter Jennings and Barbara Walters detail a schedule of events and present stories on the statue's history and the meaning of liberty. Segments include background information on two of the weekend's events, the first ever "Medal of Liberty" awards and Operation Sail, the procession of tall ships through New York Harbor. To begin with, reporter David Brinkley recounts a history of the statue, a gift from the French government. Next, Walters tells the viewers that François Mitterrand, the president of France, will join President Reagan in re-dedicating the statue. Reporter Jim Wooten then reflects on the meaning of liberty and concludes that symbols such as the statue take on added importance because the word is so difficult to define. After Wooten's segment, anchors Jennings and Walters discuss one of the weekend's events: the swearing in of 40,000 soon to be United States citizens, including dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
In the next segment, Walters interviews Itzhak Perlman, Dr. Henry Kissinger, and Dr. Kenneth Clark, three recipients of the Medal of Liberty, given to distinguished naturalized citizens. The segment concludes with a complete list of the award's recipients, including Irving Berlin, Franklin Chang-Diaz, Hanna Holborn Gray, Bob Hope, I.M. Pei, James Reston, Dr. Albert Sabin, Dr. An Wang, and Elie Wiesel. The final segment, reported by Hugh Downs, recounts a brief history of the tall ships, which are part of the weekend's events. Jennings and Walters conclude the program with a schedule for the weekend. An ABC News Business Brief follows the program. Includes commercials. Commercials included. This program is closed-captioned.
