LIBERTY WEEKEND: INTERNATIONAL NAVAL ARMADA (TV)
Summary
This ABC news special covers a portion of the events of
"Liberty Weekend," the hundredth celebration of the
Statue of Liberty. Peter Jennings reports from
Governor's Island on the progress of the International
Naval Armada into New York Harbor and details a few of
the ships that will play an important part in the
weekend. Also included is a preview of the tall ships,
scheduled to sail into the harbor the next day. Footage
of the harbor and ships is included. Jim Wooten reports
live from the U.S.S. Sequoia, also known as the
"President's Yacht," recounting the various United
States presidents who have used the ship. Next,
Jennings welcomes J. Revell Carr, director of the Mystic
Seaport Museum, to the program. He provides background
information on the U.S.S. Mount Whitney, which leads the
armada into the harbor. Reporter Steve Shepard next
reports from the World War II-era ship the U.S.S. Iowa,
on which President Reagan will later stand to review the
Armada. Ray Gandolf reports from the Italian tall ship
the Amerigo Vespucci, in a preview for the next day's
tall ship procession. Finally, Jennings and Carr
comment on the American tall ship the Eagle, which they
explain is used as a training ship for the United States
Coast Guard. Includes commercials. Commercials

hair spray, Deborah Harmon and Bob Hope for Texaco Star
gas stations, and Willie Nelson for Wrangler jeans.
