I ONLY WANT YOU TO LOVE ME {ICH WILL DOCH NUR, DASS IHR MICH LIEBT} (TV)

Summary

This drama by well-known filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder concerns the life of a young man, Peter Trepper, obsessed with winning approval and being loved. As a child he steals flowers and risks punishment in order to present a gift to his mother, and as an adult he single-handedly builds a house for his parents in order to earn their affection. Nevertheless, his parents do not care much for him and are, in fact, relieved when he and Erika, his new bride, decide to move to Munich where he can find work in construction. Peter gets a job as a bricklayer, but he spends money much more quickly than he makes it, leading Erika to worry constantly about their mounting debts. Erika soon becomes pregnant, and the pregnancy leads to even more financial difficulties. Peter works as much overtime as possible but still cannot keep up with his many monthly payments. Finally the pair travel to ask his father for money, but Peter's pride will not allow him to beg for assistance.

Peter avoids returning to work and hides the fact from Erika, but he borrows money from her grandmother and gives it to her so that she will think he is continuing to earn a paycheck. Next he buys a gun, and while Erika is occupied one evening he takes a train out of the neighborhood, planning to commit suicide. He stops at a cafe near the grandmother's house and after a few drinks tries to call his father for some money to alleviate his despair over his finances. He cannot bring himself to make the phone call, however. Soon a young drifter, possibly the cafe owner's son, stops in for a beer. The owner berates him for his lazy lifestyle, and Peter, reminded of his own conflicts with his unloving parents, snaps. (This program is in German with English subtitles.)
