Summary
Continued from T86:1282. Part seven of thirteen. One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. This television adaptation of R. F. Delderfield's novel portrays life at Bamfylde, an English public boys' school, as seen through the eyes of teacher David Powlett-Jones during the years between the two world wars. In this episode, the kindly headmaster Algy Herries decides to retire, and, along with some outside candidates, both David and Carter apply for the post. Carter wants to update the school's scientific facilities and stress examination results, while David's view of Bamfylde is of a friendlier, more traditional type. Meanwhile, David begins a romantic relationship with Julia Darbyshire, a former Bamfylde teacher. They discuss the possibility of marriage, but Julia values her independence too much to take that step. As the episode closes, the school's Board of Governors finally decides on a new headmaster.
