MASTERPIECE THEATRE: TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS {PART 8 OF 13} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T86:1284. Part eight of thirteen. One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. This television adaptation of R. F. Delderfield's novel portrays life at Bamfylde, an English public boys' school, as seen through the eyes of teacher David Powlett-Jones during the years between the two world wars. In this episode Alcock, the new headmaster, is installed, and his stern and unfriendly manner begins to cause problems at the formerly relaxed institution. He rarely consults the staff and has no interest in the school's extensive sports programs -- and his main interests seem to be economy and sanitation. David and his fellow house masters are immediately put off when his first meeting with them takes place in one of the boys' lavatories in order to institute the abolishment of graffiti. Meanwhile, Julia comes to visit and devastates David when she announces that she will be moving permanently to America and marrying her boss. David's relationship with Alcock worsens when he criticizes Alcock's severe punishment of students Monk and Hislop for smoking and gambling. Also disenchanted with the changes occurring at Bamfylde, Carter is thinking of buying and running a preparatory school, and asks David to consider a joint headmastership with him. Continues with T86:1286.
