MASTERPIECE THEATRE: TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS {PART 13 OF 13} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T86:1289. Part thirteen of thirteen. One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. This television adaptation of R. F. Delderfield's novel portrays life at Bamfylde, an English public boys' school, as seen through the eyes of teacher David Powlett-Jones during the years between the two world wars. In the final episode, Christine is bored and dissatisfied with the insular life at Bamfylde and doesn't feel as though she really belongs there. She takes some comfort in preparing for the birth of her baby and by encouraging Crispin, an unhappy, despondent student. Unfortunately, she has a miscarriage, which causes a deep and lasting depression. In order to raise her spirits and help her feel useful, David puts her in charge of the school's preparatory division, and both she and the school flourish under the challenge. Meanwhile, David's old flame Julia sends her son Charles to Bamfylde for his education and informs David that he is Charles's real father. Howarth's health declines, and he asks to be removed from the hospital so that he may spend his final days back at Bamfylde. The story ends as it began, with England involved in a world war.
