
60 MINUTES {HARRY REASONER IN ISRAEL; ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND RICHARD BURTON; A BUMPER CROP OF ACCIDENTS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, Harry Reasoner visits Israel and reports on the unsolvable problems between the Israelis and the Jordanians. Targets of Reasoner's enquiry include the following: the military fortresses by the Suez canal; Israel's air force; the security in Israel on major roads and airports; and military cemeteries, hospitals, and training camps for both men and women. Then Reasoner interviews Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, who explains why the war in Israel is different from all other wars, and a Knesset member, who explains how his views differ from those of the government. At the end of the segment, Reasoner gives his own opinion on the solution for the problems in the Middle East. Mike Wallace explains why it is impossible to explore Egypt's side of the story. In the second segment, Charles Collingwood talks to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Highlights of this segment include the following: the couple explains why arguing can be enjoyable; Richard Burton does an impersonation of John Gielgud; Elizabeth Taylor explains what Burton has taught her about performing prose and discusses her experiences while making "The Taming of the Shrew"; Taylor talks about her son, who has long hair, and why she feels the younger generation is being mistreated; Taylor offers her opinion about drugs and shows off her diamond ring; Burton discusses his Oscar nomination; and the two actors give their opinions about the importance of the Oscars. In the last segment, Wallace investigates the usefulness of bumpers. Highlights of this segment include the following: crash tests that check how effective a bumper is as a protective device; the president of the Highway Insurance Agency explains why it is possible to avoid expensive damage in most collision accidents; innovative bumpers are shown that may help to avoid car damage; older models of automobiles kept at the Ford Museum are displayed to show how automobile design has changed over the years; Ford's chief system engineer discusses the problems associated with the varying heights of bumpers; and Ford's vice president for marketing gives his prediction about the future designs of cars.
