NIGHTLINE: SOUTH AFRICA {PART 1 OF 5} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of nightly news programs. The first of a special, week-long series originating from Johannesburg, South Africa. This program features a debate between South African Minister of Foreign Affairs R.F. "Pik" Botha, and Anglican Bishop Desmond Tutu, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize. The program begins with a summary of South Africa's history and discussion about the practice of apartheid, which rigidly segregates whites and blacks and denies political rights to blacks. Reporters Jeff Greenfield and Kenneth Walker profile black South Africans and the white South Africans, who are called Afrikaners. Their report includes commentary by Afrikaner farmers Chris Derksen and Andries Botha, Afrikaner businessman Crawford Von Abo, black educator Fanyana Mazibuco, Les Kettledas of the National Association of Autoworkers, Wilson Fanti of the Mgwali Community Association, and several unidentified black South Africans. Koppel then interviews and moderates the debate between Botha, who speaks from Capetown, and Tutu, who speaks from Johannesburg. Tutu and Botha discuss the following topics, among others: the cautious political changes in South Africa; the fate of Nelson Mandela; violence in South Africa and U.S. reactions to it; the pressure from international superpowers to end apartheid, and its effects on South Africa; and the fate of the arrested leaders of the black United Democratic Front. Commercials deleted.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, 1997.
