MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING SEMINAR SERIES, THE: REPORTED BY . . . ERIC SEVAREID, NO. I {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio (known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting). Held in New York and hosted and moderated by Robert M. Batscha, president of The Museum of Television & Radio, this seminar is the first of three honoring journalist Eric Sevareid.
The program begins with a film showcasing Sevareid's career as a radio and television reporter: his work as a war correspondent for CBS during World War II; his years as CBS's Washington D. C. correspondent from the late 1940s through 1959; his work on a series of documentaries in the 1960s; his war correspondence during the Vietnam War; his interviews with "world figures" such as Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, authors Eric Hopper and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and journalist Walter Lippmann; and his farewell statement upon his retirement from television reporting. After the tape, Sevareid joins Batscha on stage; Sevareid reflects on a couple of the clips, then takes questions from the audience. Questions and comments from the audience lead to discussions of the following topics: the reasons for Sevareid's lengthy tenure at CBS; restrictions on coverage of the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983; the press and the Vietnam war; wartime censorship of the press; the effects of ratings on television journalism; news as entertainment; television as an instrument for peace; Dan Rather's controversial January 25, 1988, interview with Vice President George Bush; the definition of "news"; the relationship between print and electronic press journalists; the proper education for future journalists; and the triumphs and failures of National Public Radio and other public media outlets.
