MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING SEMINAR SERIES, THE: THE SOUTH BANK SHOW SEMINAR WITH MELVYN BRAGG {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars presented by The Museum of Television & Radio, known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting. Museum president Robert M. Batscha opens the seminar, part of the New York World Television Festival, and explains that this session will be honoring the tenth anniversary of the acclaimed British "South Bank Show." Batscha then introduces Melvyn Bragg, the host of "The South Bank Show." Bragg opens by discussing the following topics, among others: the background of the show; the show's run on London Weekend Television; the system of British television; and the team of people who work on the show. A videotape of segments from the show is then screened, including pieces featuring the following guests: Mama Lu Parks, Laurence Olivier, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Steven Spielberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Lean, Sir Alec Guinness, Luciano Pavarotti, Little Richard, Arthur Miller, Lillian Gish, Gore Vidal, Woody Allen, David Hockney, and Joseph Heller. After the screening, Bragg discusses the following topics, in response to questions from Batscha and also from the audience: the parameters of the program; the process of choosing artists who will be featured on the show; what Bragg sees as the originality of television; the style of each program; details of particular episodes and artists with whom Bragg has worked; the division between "classical" and "popular" subject matter; the American television industry; and the life of "The South Bank Show" episodes after they have aired.
