NEW YORK & CO.: MAYOR KOCH (TV)
Summary
One in this weekly public affairs series, hosted by Dick Oliver of the Daily News, that examines issues of importance to New York City. This program features Oliver, assistant managing editor of the Daily News, with regular panelists David Lampel, news director for the Inner City Public Broadcast Association, and Daily News columnist Ken Auletta, in a confrontational encounter with Mayor Edward I. Koch. The program was taped the week Koch announced his candidacy for governor, only three months after winning his second term as mayor. The panelists assail Koch for his seemingly hypocritical and contradictory statements, some of which appeared in a controversial Playboy magazine interview with the mayor. Oliver questions Koch about his critical comments in the magazine on suburban life, the office of governor, and City Council President Carol Bellamy. Koch deflects all charges of inconsistency and evades dispute by recounting his successful political history and noting his popularity in the opinion polls. Other issues raised by the panel include the tension between Koch and the black community; crime and the correctional system; Koch's pro-death penalty stance; and the problems that could arise if Koch left the burden of unfinished city y.
