FAERIE TALE THEATRE: PINOCCHIO (TV)

Summary

One in this series of whimsical adaptations of fairy tales hosted by Shelley Duvall. In this version of "Pinocchio," woodcarver Gipetto (Carl Reiner) finds a strange piece of wood that appears to be ticklish. He decides to carve something very special out of it and makes his finest marionette yet. That evening, after he completes his work, Gipetto makes a wish to have a son of his own (even though he has no wife). Sylvia (Lanie Kazan), the fairy of wooden objects, hears Gipetto's wish and brings the marionette to life. Gipetto names the wooden boy Pinocchio (played by Paul Reubens) and teaches him how to walk. Young Pinocchio has to prove to Sylvia that he can be kind and truthful in order to become a real boy. If he lies or behaves badly, however, each infraction will cause his nose to grow longer. Pinocchio behaves badly time and again and is taken advantage of by two local con men, Mario (James Belushi) and Vince (Michael Richards). They capture Pinocchio and leave him with an evil gypsy (James Coburn), and trick Gipetto by telling him that they last saw Pinocchio heading toward the ocean. While searching for his son, Gipetto is swallowed by a whale, and when Pinocchio escapes from the gypsy he searches for Gipetto and is reunited with his father in the whale's stomach. Together they escape through the whale's air hole but Gipetto can't swim, so Pinocchio bring shim safely ashore. Sylvia is impressed by Pinocchio's actions, and turns him into a real boy.
