FAERIE TALE THEATRE: LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD (TV)
Summary
One in this series of whimsical adaptations of fairy tales hosted by Shelley Duvall. In "Little Red Riding Hood," young Mary pays a visit to her grandmother, who is making a surprise birthday gift for her. Later that week, Mary's father brings home his new apprentice, Christopher, and it appears that Mary and young Chris are smitten with each other. Grandma encounters an obnoxious wolf with an English accent on the way to Mary's birthday party, but beats him up and arrives intact, as does Chris, who has survived another day's work with Mary's stern father. Mary receives a lovely red riding hood as a gift from Grandma, but after the festivities, Mary's father fires Chris when he catches Chris and Mary kissing. A few days later, Mary decides to visit her grandmother when she learns that she has a cold. En route, she encounters the wolf, who leads her to a meadow to pick flowers while he runs off to eat the ailing Grandma. When Mary arrives, the wolf tricks her by dressing up in her grandmother's clothes, and then eats her alive, but Chris arrives and saves Mary and her grandmother by cutting open the wolf's stomach and letting them out. Chris' heroism impresses Mary's father, who now accepts Chris' relationship with Mary. Mary suggests that, instead of killing the wolf, they fill his stomach with rocks and sew him up. Commercials deleted.
