JOAN SUTHERLAND IN WHO'S AFRAID OF OPERA?: DONIZETTI'S "THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT" (TV)
Summary
One in this occasional series in which popular operas are presented in a condensed, simplified format. In this program, Joan Sutherland presents Gaetano Donizetti's "The Daughter of the Regiment" ("La fille du regiment"). Sutherland and the cast sing excerpts from the opera, and explain the storyline to three puppets who are "watching" the performance. The plot concerns Marie (Sutherland), an orphan raised by a French regiment of grenadiers. Marie falls in love with Tonio (Remedios), who has been caught sneaking around the camp, and he joins the regiment to be with her. Problems arise when the Marchioness of Berkenfield (Sinclair) arrives and declares that Marie is in fact her niece. Despite Tonio's protests, Marie sadly complies with the Marchioness's demand that she return with her to a nobler, wealthier life. The Marchioness arranges for Marie to marry the son of a duchess. During a singing lesson, Marie and Sulpice (Malas), a sergeant from the regiment, upset the Marchioness by singing the regiment's marching song. Tonio and the regiment arrive on the day of the wedding, but the Marchioness asks them to leave. The Marchioness then reveals that she is actually Marie's mother. Although she still loves Tonio, Marie agrees to marry the duchess's son in order to please her mother. However, at the last moment the Marchioness has a change of heart, and allows Marie to marry Tonio.
