MONICA KAUFMAN: CLOSEUPS {DICK CLARK, ISAAC HAYES, TEMPEST STORM, PAUL NEWMAN} (TV)

Summary

One in this occasional interview series hosted by Atlanta news personality Monica Kaufman. Profiled in this segment are television disc jockey Dick Clark, songwriter and performer Isaac Hayes, burlesque queen Tempest Storm, and actor Paul Newman. Interspersed with the Clark interview are stills and clips that span thirty-five years of "American Bandstand" and celebrate Clark's contribution to rock 'n' roll. Featured in the clips are Bill Haley and his Comets, Chubby Checker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Bruce Willis, who took part in the show's thirty-fifth-anniversary celebration. Clark's third wife, Kari, who is also vice president of his production company, provides a more intimate look at the man. The next segment chronicles the bumpy career of Isaac Hayes, a forceful presence in soul and disco music. Topics covered include his collaboration with lyricist David Porter; his controversial solo album "Black Moses"; his Academy Award-winning soundtrack for the 1971 film "Shaft"; his chart-breaking hit, "Deja Vu," recorded by Dionne Warwick; and his comeback in the 1980s as an actor after the collapse of his music career in the mid-1970s. The interview with Tempest Storm provides a revealing look at her modest beginnings as the daughter of a sharecropper in southern Georgia to her celebrity status as Hollywood's premiere stripper. Topics discussed include her troubled childhood; her early success on the burlesque circuit; her alleged encounters with Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy; her failed marriage; and her homecoming to Eastman, Ga., after a forty-year absence. The segment on actor Paul Newman was taped in Atlanta at Road Atlanta racetrack, where he discusses the similarities between acting and car racing. Other topics include his reasons for becoming an actor; his work as a director; his thirty-year marriage to actress Joanne Woodward; his food business, the proceeds of which fund several charitable organizations; his son's tragic death from a drug overdose; and his extensive political activities. Interspersed with the interview are short clips, representing Newman's film career of nearly four decades, including "The Hustler," "The Sting," "The Verdict," and "The Color of Money," for which the actor won his first Academy Award. Commercials deleted. (This program received a 1989 Iris Award for excellence in local broadcasting.)
