ARMY-MCCARTHY HEARINGS, THE {EXCERPTS} (TV)
Summary
These excerpts, compiled daily, were taken from hearings conducted by the Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee to examine the conflict between Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.), and the U.S. Army. (McCarthy relinquished his position as subcommittee chairman for the duration of the hearings.) In highlights from this day's hearings, Joseph N. Welch, special counsel to the Army, questions Roy Cohn, former chief counsel to the subcommittee, about his relationship with Secretary of the Army Robert T. Stevens. McCarthy, upset by Welch's badgering of Cohn, mentions that Fred Fisher, a young lawyer in Welch's firm whom Welch had planned to bring to the hearings as an assistant, had belonged to a "communist organization," prompting Welch to respond angrily, "Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or recklessness," and later, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" In another excerpt, Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.) says that he will agree to testify under oath before the subcommittee if McCarthy does the same, but McCarthy refuses. A recess is called until 10:00 the following morning. In the final portion, Welch questions Cohn about Pvt. G. David Schine. The excerpt ends abruptly in the middle of a comment from McCarthy. No commercials. (These excerpts were compiled by CBS for its affiliates.)
