Summary

One in this public affairs series devoted to issues that concern the greater New York area. This program examines the social and economic problems that plague the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. In interviews with residents and community leaders, the following topics are discussed: the overall deterioration of Brownsville; overpopulation and tenement living; health care; unemployment; real estate development and the consequent displacement of low-income residents; crime and community relations with police; narcotics; youth and education issues; and possible solutions for improving the area. Those interviewed include Federation of Addiction Agencies officials Ed Towns, chairman of the board, and Clarence Briggs, director of field operations; Charles H. Meyer, administrator of the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center; Dr. George I. Washington, Brooklyn field office director of the N.Y. State Dep't of Commerce; Paul J. Cooper, executive director of the Brownsville Community Center; Audrey E. Scott, Brownsville regional director of the Mayor's Urban Action Task Force; N.Y. Assemblyman Samuel D. Wright, 37th District; and others. Throughout the program, narrator James McMillan provides historical and sociological information on the area. Commercials deleted.
